What’s the one thing holding you back from achieving more? This question often leads to a key realization: You are only as productive as your weakest point. We might improve various parts of our process, but if we don’t address the bottleneck, our overall impact won’t significantly change.
Think of your process like a chain. Strengthening random links won't help if the weakest one keeps breaking under pressure. The same applies to your team’s workflow. 🛑
So, how do we tackle this? Here's a simple framework to help product managers navigate bottlenecks:
1️⃣ Identify the Bottleneck: Assess your process end-to-end. Where does the flow slow down? What’s that one point preventing the team from moving faster?
2️⃣ Analyze Its Impact: Understand the impact of that bottleneck. How much does it slow down progress? Prioritize this in your optimization efforts.
3️⃣ Optimize the Bottleneck: Once identified, focus on improving it. Sometimes, small tweaks can lead to significant improvements in overall output.
For example, imagine your team builds features quickly, but releases are delayed due to slow QA processes. Instead of pushing for faster development, the real breakthrough might come from speeding up testing through automation. Optimizing that bottleneck would directly improve your time to market.
✨ “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” – Phil Jackson
Ask yourself: What’s the one thing, if improved, that would help your product team achieve more?
