Are you Getting Things Done? Three simple ways you can do it better.
This week, I'll be diving into the Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop, where we explored the GTD approach to managing tasks, priorities, and long-term goals.
🔥 Feeling Overwhelmed? 🔥
As we live in a world of constant change. Between shifting priorities, ongoing fires to put out, and keeping an eye on long-term strategic goals, it can get overwhelming fast.
During the workshop, we shared our practices, learned from each other, and uncovered the power of focus and discipline. Here are the four key takeaways that I’ll be applying—and I highly recommend you try them out as well:
1️⃣ Calendar Blocking
We all have to-do lists, but how often do we actually manage to complete everything on them? Instead of just listing tasks, I learned the importance of blocking time on your calendar. This helps you get a realistic sense of how much time each task requires and ensures you're setting aside focused time to actually get things done. Plus, it gives you a visual of whether your day is manageable or needs adjusting.
2️⃣ Focus Time & Discipline
One of the biggest distractions in our workday is the constant ping of Slack messages and emails. To counter this, you can be setting clear status updates in Slack and committing to only checking messages during designated times. This creates undisturbed focus time, which is crucial for working on complex tasks that require deep concentration.
3️⃣ Daily Reflection & Planning
One practice I’m particularly excited to implement is daily reflection and planning. Start the day with five minutes of planning—whether that’s a short walk outside or a quiet moment in a different environment to clear your head and set priorities. Then, at the end of the day, take a couple of minutes to reflect: What went well? What could I have done better? This helps to refine the approach day by day, continuously improving focus and effectiveness.
